Kids Fashion Camp is coming soon to Rosewood Art Centre

Last year we had so much fun at Rosewood Art Centre fashion camp that we’re doing it again! Rosewood has sewing machines available for class use and I will be supplying the fabric from community donations. (Thanks sewing friends)

The Camp

Day one – We all learn to use the sewing machines and get a lot of practice. Learning the sewing machine includes the parts of the machine, filling the bobbin, threading, tension, stitches, accessories and seam allowance. I make samples for the children to practice precision on. This year I will add a simple clutch to the first day. Any extra time at the end will be for open-ended sewing with scraps from the treasure chest. Attendance on the first day is very important.

Day two – We start with a basics refresher. Then we will draft skirt patterns from our measurements and make the skirts. If there is extra time we will make a belt that ties. Children that finish faster than the rest of the group will be able to enjoy open sew as no child is left behind.

This includes learning to press and use pressing tools.

Last year we did a bat wing shirt that had knit and a woven fabric combined. This year we will work on a total new design. This is day three!

Some of the older children really had great sewing skills and made their own designs with a little guidance.

Day four – We finish our shirt designs, practice accessories and embellishments.

Day five – We practice for a fashion show of all our projects we made and take class photos.

Volunteer Opportunities

Art on the commons is Aug 11th, 2018 and we need volunteers. Volunteer shifts are 2 hours long and you must be ages 15 and up. Under 15? Bring a parent. Some perks include community involvement, getting to meet the artist and a free volunteer/artist party the night before. You must be 21 or be with a parent for the party. Tracy McElfresh is an alterations and fit specialist, Kettering Arts Council member, and Kettering resident. Tracy has a skillset built from multigenerational roots in the sewing and garment industries. Operating out of a studio located inside Rosewood Art Centre she provides alterations, garment design (including a strong passion for swimwear), formal and casual dressmaking, and sewing classes. Tracy founded a meetup group in 2014 called the Dayton Garment Designers Meet Up that is open to all newcomers at any skill level.
